How to get more views on TikTok in 2026: 12 rules from our data

A person seen from behind films a small corner cafe on their phone from the pavement.
Opening on a real place, like the street outside your shop, went with more than double the usual views in our study of 1,272 short videos. From our guide on how to get more views on TikTok. AI-generated illustration.

How to get more views on TikTok, from 1,272 short videos, 1,018 slideshows and 559 top posts measured against each account's usual views.

On this page

Here is how to get more views on TikTok, based on what we measured: write your hook as text on screen, open on a real place or your usual face, make the post a list or a set of steps, cut every few seconds, and end on a recap instead of "let me know below". For slideshows, use 5 to 7 slides and make slide 1 promise something the later slides deliver. Then judge each post in its first week and make the next one better.

Every rule below comes from Postdom's own data. We compared each post with the median views of its own account, so a bakery with 900 followers is measured against itself, not against a celebrity. The data covers three studies: 1,272 short videos from 160 accounts (1,120 TikToks and 152 Instagram Reels), 1,018 TikTok photo slideshows from 129 more accounts, and 559 top TikToks posted in September 2026 and read on 1 October.

One honest caveat. Each account's three best and three worst posts were sampled on purpose, which makes every gap bigger than it would be across all posts. Trust the direction more than the exact size. These are correlations, not proof of cause, and where a finding rests on a small group of posts, we say so.

How to get more views on TikTok in 2026

TikTok says what feeds the For You feed. Its help center lists what people like, share, comment on, and watch in full or skip, plus details such as sounds and hashtags, and says these interactions, including time spent watching, are generally weighted more heavily than the rest. So the job is to make people stop, keep watching and keep the post. These 12 rules are what went with that in our data.

  1. Write the hook on screen. Put the first line on screen as text as well as saying it. Videos that did drew about 80% more views than the same account's other videos (500 videos, 82 accounts). Videos with little or no text drew less than half. Hook length didn't matter in videos. In slideshows, hooks of 9 to 15 words did better than shorter ones.
  2. Promise something on slide 1, and pay it off later. A slide 1 that opened a loop, a promise or a question the later slides answered, drew nearly three times the usual views. A slide 1 that already gave the answer away drew less than half. "3 things your dentist won't tell you" earns the swipe. "Floss before you brush" on slide 1 does not.
  3. Open on a real place or your usual face. A first frame showing a street, a shop floor or a room drew more than double the usual views. A product close-up drew about half. The account's usual presenter drew about 40% more, while a different person, such as a model or a guest, drew about 30% fewer.
  4. Make it a list or a set of steps. Slideshows built as a list or steps drew more than three times the usual views, the biggest effect we found. Listicle videos drew about double.
  5. Use 5 to 7 slides. Slideshows with 5 to 7 slides drew about 70% more views. Only 2 to 4 slides drew less than half, one of the clearest drops in the data.
  6. Put 16 to 35 words on each slide. Body slides in that range drew about 50% more views. Sparse slides of 15 words or fewer drew about 40% fewer, probably because people pause to read a fuller slide.
  7. Make it worth saving. Slideshows built to be kept, with steps, prices or a checklist, drew about three times the usual views. Photo slideshows drew a median 51 saves per 100 likes against 11 for videos.
  8. Cut every 2.4 to 6 seconds. Videos with 10 to 25 cuts a minute drew about 50% more views. One take with no cuts drew about 30% fewer.
  9. Add a voiceover. Videos with a voiceover drew nearly double the usual views, from a smaller group of 60 videos on 40 accounts. Music on its own made no clear difference.
  10. End on a recap, not "let me know below". A quick summary at the end drew about 50% more views. Ending on "let me know below" drew about 40% fewer, and it was the most common ending in the sample, on 30% of videos. In slideshows, ending on a hard ask such as "link in bio" drew about half the usual views.
  11. Don't leave the caption short. Captions under 60 characters drew about 40% fewer views. Long captions, over 300 characters, made no difference either way. TikTok's 2020 explainer lists captions among the video details it looks at, so say what the post is about.
  12. Judge a post in its first week. Most of a top post's views came in its first days. Of 12 top TikToks we measured twice, a two-day-old post grew 89% in two days, while every post older than 24 days grew by less than half a percent. If a post is flat after a week, don't wait on it. Make the next one better.

Two posts, same account

The clearest proof in the data comes from accounts that tried the same idea twice. A meal app account posted the same hook, "Meals you should make instead of eating out", with two endings. The version that ended "These recipes, plus 400+ more, inside Daily Bite" got 15.5 times its usual views. The version that ended "DOWNLOAD Daily Bite (LINK IN BIO)" got 0.29 times.

A wedding planner's slideshow that opened "If I were planning a wedding under $5K..." got 126 times its usual views. The same account's "Planning your wedding without a coordinator? I made this for you", which led with the product, got 0.25 times.

The chart puts the clearest lifts and drops from both studies side by side. Every effect shown is statistically clear, meaning its 95% range sits wholly above or below the account's usual post.

Dot chart: slideshow lists 3.29x, saveable slideshows 3.13x, slide 1 open loops 2.84x, real-place openers 2.28x, listicles 2.12x, on-screen hooks 1.79x and recaps 1.52x went with more views. Soft invites 0.61x, product close-ups 0.56x, answers on slide 1 0.46x, 2 to 4 slides 0.40x, moodboards 0.34x and question captions 0.17x (23 videos) went with fewer.

Hook ideas to test

In the 1,018 slideshows, a few hook patterns stood out, though each comes from a small group of posts, so treat them as ideas to test, not rules:

  • A rating or a ranking ("ranking every budgeting app I've tried"): 3.4 times the account's usual views, from 20 posts on 10 accounts.
  • Your job in the hook ("as an interior designer"): 3.2 times, from 27 posts on 10 accounts. In videos, hooks like "as a dentist" also did well, from 30 videos, but those videos were saved and shared less.
  • A "Part 2" series: 2.6 times, from 23 posts.
  • "Save this" in the hook: 3.1 times, from just 13 posts.

Money amounts, years, "nobody tells you" hooks and lowercase looked promising but weren't clear in our data. A myth or warning hook that stood alone, with no list after it, drew a third of the usual views, so if you open with a myth, follow it with a list.

Search is a second way into your post, separate from the For You feed. TikTok's help center says search results depend partly on how well a post matches what people type, along with its hashtags and sound. So say your topic in plain words in three places: the on-screen hook, the caption and out loud. A hook that says "how to clean white sneakers" can be found. One that says "you won't believe this" can't. We didn't measure search traffic, so this one comes from TikTok's own page, not our data.

How to get followers on TikTok

Views come first, because people follow accounts they keep seeing. TikTok's 2020 explainer says neither follower count nor past hits are direct factors in its recommendations, so a new account can reach people from its first post. In our September trends scan, 7 of the 41 top posts from accounts with under 1,000 followers passed 1 million views. These were top search results, so they show what's possible, not what's typical.

Our studies measured views, not follows, so here is what the data suggests rather than proves:

  1. Show the same face, or the same place. The account's usual presenter drew about 40% more views than its other videos, and a different person about 30% fewer. People follow someone they recognise.
  2. Run a series. Slideshow hooks marked "Part 2" or "Part 3" drew 2.6 times the views, from a small group of 23 posts. A series gives people a reason to follow so they catch the next one.
  3. Ask for the follow, not a comment. Videos that ended by asking for a follow drew about double the views, though from only 47 videos and not a clear result. "Let me know below" drew about 40% fewer.
  4. Pick formats that travel past your followers. Measured against follower count, "expectation vs reality" posts reached a median 79 times the poster's following, from just 8 posts, and "me when..." posts 62 times, from 13.
  5. Tell people what they'll get. Say in your bio what you post and who it's for, so a new viewer knows why to follow. We didn't measure bios or going Live, so treat this as common sense, not data.

Breakouts happen to ordinary accounts. Of the 160 accounts we studied, found through TikTok search, 84% had at least one video that drew 10 times their usual views. The typical TikTok account in that sample had about 28,000 followers and a median video of about 3,000 views. For more on what makes a post spread, see how to go viral on TikTok.

What our data says about slideshows vs videos

They do different jobs. Photo slideshows were saved 4.5 times as often as videos per 100 likes, and 73 of 565 carousels had more saves than likes. But they drew under a third of the comments videos did. If you want comments, videos with a warning hook, such as "what NOT to do", drew 6.7 comments per 100 likes, from 28 videos. More in what people save on TikTok.

If you make slideshows, our guide on how to make a slideshow on TikTok has the exact taps. On Instagram, two of these rules held in our smaller sample of 105 carousels: lists drew 3.3 times the likes, and leaving the product out drew 2.4 times. The rest weren't clear there. Why does my TikTok have 0 views

Zero views often points to a setting or a review rather than your hook. Check these, in order:

  1. The privacy setting. TikTok's help center says a new post keeps the privacy setting of your last one, so if your last post was set to Only you, this one is too. Only public posts appear under the posts tab.
  2. The review. TikTok's recommendation page says its safety teams may review content as it rises in popularity, that content breaking the Community Guidelines is removed, and that some content allowed on TikTok still isn't recommended in the For You feed. Its 2020 explainer adds that videos just uploaded or under review may not be recommended yet.
  3. The app. Update TikTok, restart it, and switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data if the upload looks stuck.

If you get some views but not many, look at the hook. The weakest posts in our data gave the answer away on slide 1, used 2 to 4 slides, opened on a product close-up, or had little or no text on screen.

How to get more views on TikTok after posting

Most of a post's views come early. Of 12 top TikToks we measured on two dates, every one older than 24 days grew by less than half a percent between readings, while a two-day-old post grew 89%. So what you do in the first days counts most:

  • Share it. TikTok lists shares among the interactions it weighs.
  • Reply to comments, especially questions. TikTok lists comments among the interactions it weighs too.
  • If the post is getting no views at all, check its privacy setting before anything else.

Does editing a TikTok after posting hurt views? Our data didn't test it, so we can't say. What you can't fix after posting is a weak first second. If a post stalls, make the next one with a stronger hook rather than reposting the same video.

How to get more views on TikTok for free

Every rule in this guide costs nothing. Text on screen, a real place, a list, quick cuts, a voiceover and a recap are choices, not purchases. TikTok's own editor covers text, voiceover, cuts and sound, as its editing guide shows.

If you want to pay, TikTok's own ad tools let you promote organic videos, photo posts and LIVEs from inside the app. Our data didn't test paid promotion, so we can't put a number on it. Don't buy views from third-party sites. TikTok's explainer says spam such as videos seeking to artificially increase traffic may not be recommended.

If you'd rather not make every post by hand, Postdom reads your website and writes slideshows built on the slideshow rules above (5 to 7 slides, a slide 1 that opens a loop, no pitch up front), plus short-form videos. By default, each post waits for your approval before anything is published. Videos it makes can go to TikTok, Instagram, YouTube, Facebook and LinkedIn, and your own uploads to all 9 platforms it supports. The Free plan is $0 and makes 5 posts a month for 1 account, with a Postdom watermark.

What to avoid

These went with fewer views than the same account's usual post in our data.

  • A moodboard with no hook: about a third of the usual views, from 161 slideshows.
  • Only 2 to 4 slides: less than half, from 142 slideshows.
  • Little or no text on screen: less than half.
  • Giving the answer away on slide 1: less than half.
  • A product showcase slideshow: less than half.
  • Ending a slideshow on a hard ask like "link in bio" or "DM me": about half.
  • A product close-up as the first frame: about half.
  • A caption under 60 characters: about 40% fewer.
  • Ending on "let me know below": about 40% fewer.
  • A spoken-only hook with no text: about 40% fewer.
  • One take with no cuts: about 30% fewer.
  • Green-screen explainers came last of eight video formats at 0.53 times, from a small group of 14 videos. Walls of text sat at 0.73 times, which wasn't a clear difference. Details in our wall-of-text study.
  • A question at the end of the caption: far fewer views, but from only 23 videos. That's too few to call a rule, but we wouldn't end on one by default.
  • Bought views or followers. TikTok says spam meant to inflate traffic may not be recommended.

For how these rules change by industry, our TikTok by industry study splits them out for local services, product brands, apps and immigration advisers. If your goal is income as well as views, see how to make money on TikTok and how to make money with AI.

FAQ

How do I get 1,000 views on TikTok fast?

Write the hook on screen, open on a real place, make it a list, cut every few seconds and end on a recap. Then use a trending format while new examples are still appearing. For the typical account in our study, the median video already drew about 3,000 views, so 1,000 is often closer than it feels.

How do I make my video go viral on TikTok?

Make it a list or steps, put the hook on screen, open on a real place, and end on a recap. 84% of the accounts we studied had at least one video at 10 times their usual views. Our guide on how to go viral on TikTok has the full breakdown.

Is 10,000 views on TikTok viral?

It depends on the account. We used 10 times an account's own usual views as the bar for a breakout. For the typical account in our study, with a median of about 3,000 views a video, that is 30,000. For an account that usually gets 500, 10,000 is a breakout.

What is the 3 second rule on TikTok?

It's shorthand for how quickly people decide to keep watching. TikTok says interactions, including whether people watch in full or skip, are generally weighted more heavily than its other signals. In our data, the openings that held people were a hook written on screen and a real place in the first frame.

How can I get 1,000 followers on TikTok for free?

Show the same face or place, say in your bio what you post, and run a series so people follow to catch the next part. Ask for the follow at the end rather than asking for comments.

Should you buy TikTok views?

No. TikTok's explainer says spam such as videos seeking to artificially increase traffic may not be recommended. If you want to pay, TikTok's own tools let you promote a post from inside the app.

Why are my TikTok views so low?

If views are low but not zero, look at the first second. The weakest posts in our study gave the answer on slide 1, used only 2 to 4 slides, opened on a product close-up, or had little or no text on screen. Fix the hook first.

Does posting time matter on TikTok?

Our studies didn't test posting times, so we won't give you a chart. TikTok Studio's analytics show when your own viewers are active, which is a better guide for your account than any general list.

How long should a TikTok be to get views?

No length was reliably better for views in our data, from under 10 seconds to over 90. Longer videos did earn more saves: TikToks over 90 seconds got 29% more saves per view.

Do hashtags help you get more views on TikTok?

TikTok lists hashtags among the content details its recommendations and search use, alongside sounds. It weights how people interact with a post more heavily. We didn't measure hashtags, so we can't give you a number.
