How to go viral on TikTok: 8 steps from 1,272 videos (2026)

We compared 1,272 short videos with each account's usual views, plus 559 top TikToks from September. Here is what went with breakouts, and what didn't.

Here is how to go viral on TikTok, based on Postdom's study of 1,272 short videos and 559 top TikToks from September: write your hook as text on screen, open on a real place or your usual presenter, make it a list or a story, cut every few seconds, and end on a recap instead of "let me know below". Then post while the trend you are borrowing is still under a week old.
None of this guarantees a hit, and nobody can. But breakouts are more common than they look: 84% of the 160 accounts we studied had at least one video that drew 10 times their usual views. Each video was measured against its own account's median, so a corner bakery is compared with itself, not with a celebrity. The full study is what makes a short video go viral.

How to go viral on TikTok in 8 steps
- Write the hook on screen. Hooks shown as text drew 1.79 times the views of the same account's other videos. Spoken-only hooks drew 0.62 times.
- Say what you do in the first line. Hooks that opened with the speaker's job, such as "as a dentist", drew 3.16 times the views, from a small group of 30 videos.
- Open on a real place or a familiar face. A street, a shop floor or a room drew 2.28 times. A product close-up drew 0.56 times. The account's usual presenter drew 1.40 times.
- Make it a list or a story. Listicles drew 2.12 times the views and first-person story hooks 1.74 times.
- Cut every 2.5 to 6 seconds. That pace drew 1.53 times. One take with no cuts drew 0.69 times.
- End on a recap. A quick summary at the end drew 1.52 times. "Let me know below" drew 0.61 times, and captions that ended on a question drew 0.17 times. Plenty of guides tell you to end with a question. In our data, captions that did went with far fewer views. If you want comments, open with a warning such as "what NOT to do" instead.
- Borrow a trend while it is fresh. Among September's top posts, ones under a week old already had a median 315,000 views. Month-old ones had 652,000, so about half the views arrive in week one. Copy a format while new examples are still appearing.
- Make it worth keeping. On TikTok, videos over 90 seconds earned 29% more saves per view, and tutorials drew 41 saves per 100 likes against 4 for jokes.
Two more things the 8 steps leave out. First, words: TikTok says video information such as captions, sounds and hashtags is among what its recommendations look at, so say your main topic in the video, on screen and in the caption. Second, timing: our study didn't test posting times. TikTok Studio analytics show the activity times of your viewers, which is a better guide for your account than any general chart.
These are correlations, from a sample that deliberately included each account's three best and three worst videos. That inflates the exact multiples, so trust the direction more than the size.

What is considered viral on TikTok
There isn't one agreed number. A million views is a common shorthand, and some guides use 500,000, but it means very different things for an account with 500 followers and one with 5 million.
We used a relative bar instead: a video that drew 10 times its own account's median views. By that measure, breakouts were the norm: 84% of the 160 accounts in our study cleared it at least once. The typical account's best recent video drew 42 times the views of its median one, 96 videos topped 100 times their account's usual audience, and 20 topped 1,000 times.
For scale, these were mostly modest accounts. The typical TikTok account in the sample had about 28,000 followers, and its median video drew about 3,000 views. For that account, 30,000 views is a breakout.
How to go viral on TikTok without followers
Followers help, but TikTok says they don't decide reach. In its own explainer, TikTok says neither follower count nor a history of high-performing videos is a direct factor in its recommendation system. Its help center lists what does feed the For You feed: what people like, share, comment on and watch in full or skip, plus details such as sounds and hashtags.
Our study of TikTok trends shows small accounts breaking through. Of 559 top TikTok posts from September 2026, seven came from accounts with under 1,000 followers and passed 1 million views. One account with 491 followers posted a 5.5-second "this is your sign" clip that reached 5.2 million.
Some formats travel further than others from a small base. The median "expectation vs reality" post reached 79 times its poster's follower count, and the median "me when..." post 62 times. Twenty of the 38 top POV posts came from accounts under 10,000 followers.
Keep it in proportion. These are the top of TikTok's search results, not typical outcomes. Most posts from small accounts never come close.
Make TikTok videos faster with Postdom
Postdom reads your website and makes short-form videos and slideshows in your brand, with voiceover and captions. You approve, edit or reject each one, and Postdom learns from what you pick. Approved posts are scheduled to TikTok, Instagram, YouTube, Facebook and LinkedIn, and you can remix a trending format into your own version while it is still fresh. By default nothing goes out until you approve it. Once 9 of your last 10 posts of one kind go through without edits, Postdom offers to post that kind for you.
How to go viral on TikTok for free
Everything in the 8 steps above costs nothing. Text on screen, a real place, a list, quick cuts and a recap are all choices, not purchases. TikTok's own editor covers text, sound, cuts and timing, as its editing guide shows.
If you want help making the videos, Postdom's Free plan makes 5 posts a month from your website on 1 connected account, with no card, and your first viral remix is free.
What our data says about going viral
Hook length doesn't matter. What it says does
Posting advice often fixates on keeping hooks short. In our data, hooks of every length, from five words or fewer to more than 15, landed between 0.83 and 1.08 times typical views. The median hook ran seven words. Writing the hook on screen, and saying who you are, mattered far more.
Faces matter for product brands
In our study of TikTok by industry, small product brands' videos with nobody on screen drew 0.42 times the views of the same brands' other videos. Videos with the account's usual face drew 2.5 times. A different person, such as a model or a guest, went with 0.69 times across the whole sample.
Walls of text and green screens lag
Videos built as a block of text over a stock clip drew a median 0.73 times the account's usual views, and only 4 in 10 beat it. Green-screen explainers did worst at 0.53 times. Short clips with one line on screen and the story in a long caption topped the ranking at 1.67 times, from a small sample. Our wall-of-text study has the details.

Viral and saved are different goals
Funny videos reached 2.7 times their account's usual views, the highest of any tone, but drew just 4 saves per 100 likes. Tutorials drew 41. Videos that opened with a warning, such as "What NOT to do", drew 6.7 comments per 100 likes, against 1.1 for POV clips. Pick the goal before you pick the format. More in our study of what people save on TikTok.
Length changes saves, not views
No video length, from under 10 seconds to over 90, was reliably better for views. But TikToks over 90 seconds earned 29% more saves and 26% more shares per view than the account's typical video.
Most views come in the first week
Top posts under a week old had a median 315,000 views. Posts a month old had 652,000. Each age group is a different set of posts, so this is a rough guide, but it says a hit does about half its first month in week one. Before you copy a trend, check that new examples are still appearing that week. Our TikTok trends study lists the formats that were still rising.

FAQ
What is the 3 second rule on TikTok?
It is shorthand for how little time you get before people swipe away. TikTok says finishing a video from beginning to end is a strong signal of interest, so the opening has to earn the rest. In our data, the opening that worked best was a hook written on screen, and hooks that said who you are, such as "as a dentist", drew 3.16 times the views of the same account's other videos, from a small group of 30.
How do you get 1,000 views on TikTok fast?
There is no shortcut, but it may be closer than you think: for the typical account in our study, the median video already drew about 3,000 views. Put the hook on screen, make it a list, cut every few seconds, end on a recap, and copy a trending format in its first week.
When is the best time to post on TikTok?
Our study didn't test posting times, so we won't give you a chart. TikTok Studio's analytics show when your own viewers are active, which is the better guide for your account.
How many views is viral on TikTok?
There isn't one agreed number. A useful bar is 10 times your own account's usual views. In our study of 160 accounts, 84% had at least one video clear it. For an account whose videos usually get 3,000 views, that is 30,000.
Can you go viral on TikTok with 0 followers?
Yes, though it is rare. TikTok says follower count isn't a direct factor in recommendations. In our September 2026 trends scan, seven posts from accounts with under 1,000 followers passed 1 million views.
Do hashtags help you go viral on TikTok?
TikTok lists hashtags among the content details its recommendations look at, alongside sounds and views. It weights how people interact with a video more heavily. Our study didn't measure hashtags, so we can't put a number on them.
What is the best length for a viral TikTok?
In our data, no length was reliably better for views. Videos over 90 seconds earned 29% more saves and 26% more shares per view, so go longer when the content is worth keeping.
Should I end my TikTok with a question?
Not in the caption. Captions that ended on a question drew 0.17 times typical views, and spoken endings like "let me know below" drew 39% fewer views. A quick recap at the end drew 52% more.
How fast do TikTok trends die?
Faster than most people think. Among September's top TikToks, posts under a week old already had a median 315,000 views, about half the 652,000 of month-old posts. Post within the first week if you can.
