How to use Instagram Reels for business: switch to a business account, post short vertical videos under 3 minutes that open on a real place with the hook written on screen, end on a quick recap, and check each Reel's insights to see what to make next. A steady, plain routine beats a single polished video.

Last checked: 8 October 2026. We checked the account steps, length rules and insights definitions against Instagram's help center, and Instagram's "Instagram Ranking Explained" post, on 8 October 2026. Our numbers come from Postdom's study of 1,272 short videos (1,120 TikToks and 152 Instagram Reels from 160 accounts), collected on 2 October 2026.

If you only need the buttons to record and share a Reel, our guide on how to make a reel on Instagram has every tap. This guide is the business side: what to post, how often and how to tell what works.

How to use Instagram Reels for business in 8 steps

  1. Switch to a business account. It is free and gives you insights, a contact button and ads.
  2. Pick three formats you can repeat. A list, a walk through your place and a how-to cover most businesses.
  3. Write the hook on screen. Say what the viewer gets in the first line, as text.
  4. Open on a real place. Your shop floor, your street, a client's kitchen. Not a product close-up.
  5. Keep it under 3 minutes. Instagram won't recommend longer Reels to new audiences.
  6. End on a recap and a plain next step. Skip "let me know below".
  7. Post on a schedule you can keep. One Reel a week is a fair start.
  8. Read the insights after a week. Make more of what got watched to the end.

Instagram Reels for business

Reels are where Instagram shows your video to people who don't follow you yet. For a business, that means new eyes on what you sell, at no cost per view.

Instagram's ranking explainer says its most important predictions for Reels are how likely you are to reshare a Reel, watch it all the way through, like it and go to its audio page. It also says it aims to make some Reels less visible, such as low-resolution or watermarked Reels, Reels that are muted or have borders, Reels that are mostly text, and Reels already posted on Instagram (Instagram Ranking Explained, read 8 Oct 2026).

So make a video worth finishing, made for Instagram, with your own footage or images.

Start with the right account. Instagram's help center says business accounts "are best for retailers, local businesses, brands, organizations and service providers", and creator accounts suit public figures and content producers. To switch in the app:

  1. Tap Profile or your profile picture in the bottom right.
  2. Tap More to open Settings and activity.
  3. Below For professionals, tap Account type and tools.
  4. Select Switch to professional account, choose a category and tap Switch to professional account.
  5. Choose Business, tap Next, then add your contact details and, if you like, connect your Facebook Page.

Instagram Reels ideas for business

You don't need new ideas every week, just a few formats you can fill again and again. These come from Postdom's study, which compared each video with the same account's usual views.

Reel formats that went with more views, Postdom study of 1,272 short videos
FormatWhat it looks like for a businessResult in our studySource and date
List video"3 things to check before you book a plumber"2.12 times the usual views. 4.36 times for local and professional service accounts (31 videos, 21 accounts, wide margin of error)Postdom study, data collected 2 Oct 2026

TutorialHow to use, fit or care for what you sellNo clear difference to views, but 58% more saves per view on TikTokPostdom study, data collected 2 Oct 2026

Pick the person on screen with care. The account's usual on-screen person went with 1.40 times the usual views. A different person, such as a model or a guest, went with 0.69 times. A face in the first frame on its own made no difference, at 1.00 times.

The weak opener was the one many shops reach for first. Opening on a product close-up drew 0.56 times the usual views. Show the product in use, in a real place, instead.

Most of the study was TikTok. On the 152 Reels the effects mostly pointed the same way but were smaller and not statistically clear on their own. These are correlations, so trust the direction more than the size. The full write-up is what makes a short video go viral.

Put the hook on screen as text

Videos whose opening line appeared as text on screen drew 1.79 times the views of the same account's other videos. Hooks that were only spoken drew 0.62 times, and videos with almost no text on screen drew 0.46 times. On the 58 Reels with on-screen hooks the lift was 1.16 times and not statistically clear, but text costs nothing to add.

Length of the hook didn't matter. Hooks of every length landed between 0.83 and 1.08 times typical views. What it says matters more, so name the viewer's problem or your job in plain words.

Keep it to one line. Instagram shows mostly-text Reels less.

Reel length and specs

Under 3 minutes is the rule that matters, because reaching new people is the point. Inside that, length made no reliable difference to views in our data, from under 10 seconds to over 90. The median video ran 44 seconds.

How often to post Reels

Instagram's help center sets no target number of Reels per week. Pick a pace you can keep for three months, because one hit is luck and a run of posts is a system.

One Reel a week is a fair start for a business owner doing it alone. Give each one a week, check its insights, then make more of what got watched. Our guide on how to go viral on Instagram explains why a steady run beats chasing a single hit: 84% of the 160 accounts we studied had a video that drew 10 times their usual views.

If you want to schedule ahead, Instagram's app lets a public account schedule a Reel from More options before you share.

Read your Reels insights

Insights tell you what to make next. Instagram says you need a public account to view them, and a professional account adds the professional dashboard. To see one Reel's numbers, open the Reels tab on your profile, open the Reel and tap View insights.

Captions and calls to action

In our study, captions under 60 characters drew 0.60 times the usual views, and the 23 captions that ended on a question drew 0.17 times, from a small group. Write a few full sentences that say who it is for and what to do next.

For the ending of the video, a quick recap drew 1.52 times the usual views overall. A soft invite such as "let me know below" drew 0.61 times overall and 0.55 times on the 54 Reels that used it. Hard sells such as "link in bio" or "book now" made no clear difference, at 0.94 times. So say your next step plainly, and end on the recap.

If you want comments, ask for one word. Reels whose caption asked viewers to comment a specific word, usually to get a guide or link, drew 5.1 comments per 100 likes, against 2.2 with no such ask. The Reels groups were small (17 and 46 Reels).

How to use Instagram Reels for marketing

Marketing means turning views into customers. Reels do the reach. Your profile does the selling.

  • Make the profile ready. A clear name, a one-line bio that says what you sell and where, and the contact button from your business account.
  • Tie each Reel to one offer. A list Reel about choosing a service should end on the service you sell.
  • Use the same face. The account's usual on-screen person went with 1.40 times the usual views in our study.
  • Count follows and messages, not only views. Follows per Reel is in insights. Calls and messages don't always trace back to a Reel, so ask new customers where they found you.

Keep posting Reels without a content team with Postdom

Making Reels takes time, and that is the hard part for a small business. Postdom reads your website and turns it into short vertical videos in your brand. Each one has a hook written on screen, stock clips and AI-made shots matched to each line, and music. Its styles include lists and countdowns, and list videos drew 2.12 times the usual views in our study. If you have already filmed something, you can upload it and Postdom schedules it as it is.

You approve, edit or reject each one, and Postdom learns from what you choose and from what performs. Approved Reels are scheduled to Instagram, and the same video can go to TikTok, YouTube Shorts, Facebook and LinkedIn. By default nothing posts until you approve it. By default, approved posts go out at 9am and 7pm in your time zone, 2 a day per account, and you can set other times. Once 9 of your last 10 posts of one kind go through without edits, Postdom offers to post that kind for you, and you choose whether to accept.

On paid plans, an AI persona can put the same person on screen in every video, with no camera. The AI label is on by default for Instagram posts.

The Free plan is $0, with 1 post a month on 2 accounts on any platform and no card. Free posts carry a small Postdom watermark, and Instagram says it shows watermarked Reels less, so paid plans can turn the watermark off. Starter is $39 a month for 30 posts across 3 connected accounts. See pricing for the other plans.

FAQ

Do I need a business account to post Reels?

No. You don't need a business account to post Reels. A business account adds the professional dashboard, a contact button and ads, and Instagram says business accounts are best for retailers, local businesses, brands and service providers.

How long should a business Reel be?

Under 3 minutes, because Instagram won't recommend longer Reels to new audiences. In our data no length from under 10 seconds to over 90 was reliably better for views, and the median video ran 44 seconds.

How many Reels should a business post a week?

Instagram's help center gives no number. One a week is a fair start if you do it alone. Check each Reel's insights after a week and add more once you know which format works.

Can someone make Reels for my business for me?

Yes. Postdom reads your website and makes Reels in your brand, then schedules the ones you approve. By default nothing posts until you approve it.
