Instagram Post Size: Every Dimension for 2026

The best Instagram post size is 1080 × 1350 px, a 4:5 portrait. It fills more of the feed than a square and is the tallest shape Instagram's publishing API accepts. Postdom makes your Instagram posts at this size automatically, so nothing gets cropped in the feed.

Use 1080 × 1350 px for feed posts and 1080 × 1920 px for Stories and Reels. Every size below comes from Instagram's Help Centre or Meta's developer docs.

Instagram post dimensions

Instagram keeps a photo at full quality when it is between 320 px and 1080 px wide, with a shape from 1.91:1 to 3:4. Anything narrower is enlarged, anything wider is reduced, and anything outside that shape is cropped.

  • Portrait: 1080 × 1350 px (4:5)
  • Square: 1080 × 1080 px (1:1)
  • Landscape: 1080 × 566 px (1.91:1)

Scheduling tools use the publishing API, which takes JPEG images from 4:5 to 1.91:1, up to 8 MB, and scales wider images down to 1440 px.

Instagram portrait size

The safe Instagram portrait size is 1080 × 1350 px (4:5). It works in the app and through the publishing API, and it takes up more of the screen than a square.

The app now keeps photos as tall as 1080 × 1440 px (3:4), but the publishing API still stops at 4:5. If you schedule posts, stay at 1080 × 1350 px.

Instagram story size

Make Stories 1080 × 1920 px, a full-screen 9:16. Meta recommends 9:16 for Story images so nothing is cropped or padded, and gives no exact pixel size.

Postdom keeps text clear of the top and bottom of every Story, where Instagram shows your name and the reply bar.

Instagram reel size

Make Reels 1080 × 1920 px (9:16). Instagram accepts shapes from 1.91:1 to 9:16 at 720 px or more, and recommends a 420 × 654 px cover image.

For crop or fit, export settings and the publishing limits, see the full Instagram Reel size guide.

Instagram profile picture size

Instagram's Help Centre gives no pixel size for profile pictures. Your picture shows as a small circle, so a good tip is to upload a square image with the face or logo in the centre, away from the corners.

Questions about Instagram post size

What is the best Instagram post size?

1080 × 1350 px, a 4:5 portrait. It fills more of the feed than a square and works in the app and through the publishing API.

Can an Instagram post be 1080 × 1440 px?

In the app, yes: Instagram keeps photos up to 3:4. Through the publishing API, which scheduling tools use, the tallest shape is 4:5, so 1080 × 1350 px is the safe choice.

Does Instagram crop photos that are the wrong shape?

Yes. A photo outside 1.91:1 to 3:4 is cropped to fit, and every slide in a slideshow takes the same shape.

Does Postdom resize posts for Instagram?

Postdom makes posts at Instagram's sizes from the start: 1080 × 1350 px for the feed and 1080 × 1920 px for Stories and Reels. Then you approve them and Postdom posts them, or you schedule them yourself.
