TikTok aspect ratio: choose your video shape

Choose a TikTok aspect ratio that keeps the important parts of your video in view. 9:16 is TikTok's performance-ad recommendation, not a universal organic-upload requirement. For a wider clip, crop if you can lose the edges; fit it with padding if the viewer needs the whole picture.

Which TikTok aspect ratio should I choose?

Read a ratio as width:height. Portrait is taller than it is wide; square has equal sides. Resolution is the number of pixels in that frame.

9:16 is TikTok's performance-ad recommendation, not a universal organic-upload requirement. Square and landscape are not rejected by Postdom just for their shape; width and height are checked separately.

Find the exported dimensions in your editor or the file's video properties. Enter width first. Try an illustrative example to compare the original picture with a centered crop or padded fit.

Enter your exported video's width and height in pixels. Nothing is uploaded; this checks only the numbers you enter.

Width: within bounds. Height: within bounds.

This shape differs from TikTok's 9:16 performance-ad recommendation; that alone is not a Postdom rejection rule.

This does not inspect a video or check duration, file size, format, account eligibility, or how TikTok will display it. A dimensions-only result is not upload approval.

Fit the whole picture68.4% of the final canvas area is padding

Crop removes edges; fit keeps the whole picture but makes it smaller. Reposition the crop in your editor if the subject is off-center. This tool does not inspect or resize a file.

How do I change the shape without stretching the video?

A close-up may work with a crop. A screen recording may need every label. Keep the proportions intact whichever way you choose.

  1. Choose the canvas

Set the output shape in your editor. The examples above are illustrative editing canvases, not required pixel presets. A shape alone does not determine whether a file can be uploaded.

  2. Crop to fill, or fit the whole picture

For a crop, enlarge the clip proportionally until it fills the canvas, then reposition the subject. For a fit, scale it down until all edges are visible and add a background to the unused area. Do not adjust width and height independently: that stretches the picture.

  3. Review movement and text

Play the whole clip. Check that a moving speaker stays inside the crop and that labels or captions remain readable at phone size. A centered calculation cannot tell where your subject is.

  4. Export and check again

Inspect the exported file's actual dimensions, then enter them above. Use the full exported-file checker for duration, format, and byte size too. Review the final video in the posting surface you intend to use before confirming publication. This page does not predict native TikTok display, crop the file, or improve missing image detail.

Which video requirements does Postdom check?

Dimension bounds are separate from duration, format and file size. Recommendations are creative advice, not extra upload rules. The transfer guide is API documentation, not a list of every native app or ads requirement.

TikTok's media-transfer guide does not publish one required ratio. Postdom does not reject a video just because its ratio differs from the creative recommendation.

Postdom's file-size ceiling is 500 MiB (524,288,000 bytes). This product limit does not describe every native TikTok upload surface. File-size rule verified . See the upload reference.

The 10 minutes (600 seconds) ceiling is a Postdom check, not a promise that your account can publish that length. The transfer guide describes its long-video allowance for the initialize Upload Video endpoint, not a universal Direct Post limit. Check the selected account and posting method before exporting.

If a declaration is rejected, fix the width, height, duration, format or file size in the export. Renaming a file does not change its format. Passing the dimensions-only checker does not check file contents or authorize publication.

Video shape, quality, and upload questions

Does my video have to be vertical?

Postdom does not reject a video just because it is square or landscape. TikTok's media-transfer guide does not publish one required API ratio. 9:16 is TikTok's performance-ad recommendation, not a universal organic-upload requirement. Dimensions, duration, and the selected account's requirements still matter.

Are aspect ratio and resolution the same thing?

No. Aspect ratio describes width compared with height; resolution gives the actual pixel dimensions. A square stays 1:1 whether its sides contain hundreds or thousands of pixels. A ratio alone cannot tell you whether the dimensions meet an upload limit.

How long can a TikTok video be?

Postdom's upload ceiling is 10 minutes (600 seconds), but TikTok account limits can be lower. The transfer guide's duration allowance refers to the initialize Upload Video endpoint, not universal Direct Post eligibility. Check the selected account before uploading.

What file size and format does Postdom accept for TikTok?

Postdom accepts MP4 or QuickTime. Its file-size ceiling is 500 MiB (524,288,000 bytes). These are Postdom's upload limits, not a claim about every native TikTok upload surface. A file must also meet the dimension and duration checks.

Will changing the aspect ratio make a blurry video sharp?

Changing the canvas changes the frame, not the detail captured in the original video. Start from the clearest source you have and review the exported file. TikTok's 720p or higher advice comes from its performance-ad guidance; it is not a promise of image quality after upload.
