Instagram allows 5 hashtags on a post or Reel. Instagram's head, Adam Mosseri, announced the cap in December 2025 (reported by TechBuzz, linked below). Instagram's Help Center page on hashtags still describes the older, higher limit, so go by what the app lets you post today.

Five slots change how you choose. Older advice to paste a block of 20 or 30 tags under every post no longer fits the app, and broad tags on their own put a post in a crowd it can't stand out in. Tags about your actual service and place reach the people looking for it.

How many hashtags on Instagram

Use 3 to 5. With five slots, spend one on a broad tag people search for your category, two or three on what this post is actually about, and keep one for your brand tag, made from your name, so your own posts collect under it over time.

Mosseri has said a few specific tags do more than a long list of generic ones, because hashtags help Instagram understand what a post is about.
